Every iPhone from the XS, XS Max and XR (2018) onward supports eSIM in India. Most handsets sold here, including the iPhone 17 series and the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, keep a physical SIM slot alongside the eSIM. The iPhone Air is the odd one out: it is eSIM-only in every market, so there is no SIM slot at all. Telecom operators Jio, Airtel and Vi all offer eSIM on compatible iPhones.

Which iPhones support eSIM in India?
As per Apple’s India support page, users need an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later, along with a carrier that supports eSIM. Here is how the range breaks down for handsets sold in India:
| Model | eSIM? | Physical SIM slot on India models |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max | Yes | Yes. India is not one of the 12 eSIM-only markets |
| iPhone Duo (announced September 2026) | Yes | No. eSIM-only worldwide |
| iPhone Air | Yes | No. eSIM-only in every market |
| iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone 17e | Yes | Check the model you are buying |
| iPhone 16 series and 16e | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone 15 and 14 series | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone 13, 12 and 11 series | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone XS, XS Max, XR | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone SE (2020, 2022) | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone X, 8 and older | No | Physical SIM only |
It may be noted that there is no standard ‘iPhone 18’ this year, only the 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and the Duo. The SIM slot column follows Apple’s regional information and published eSIM-only market lists. Please confirm the SIM setup of the exact phone before you pay.
Does your iPhone have a SIM slot in India?
This depends on where the handset was sold, not just on the model. Since the iPhone 14, the Cupertino-based tech giant has sold eSIM-only versions in the US. The iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models are eSIM-only in 12 places: the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max follow the same list. India is not on it, so iPhones bought here keep a nano-SIM tray, and users can run their existing SIM and an eSIM together.
The exception is the iPhone Air. Apple says it is activated with an eSIM and doesnt support a physical SIM, so there is no slot on any Air, India included. An eSIM sits inside the handset, so there is no seperate card to lose, but buyers should make sure their carrier can issue an eSIM first.
Two lines at once: an iPhone can store several eSIM profiles (Apple says eight or more), but only two lines are active at a time. Most guides say the iPhone 13 and later can run two eSIMs together, while older models pair one eSIM with one physical SIM. Check Settings > Mobile Service on your phone, and see our dual eSIM iPhone guide for the model list.
How to check if your iPhone supports eSIM
- Open Settings > General > About and scroll to EID. If you see a 32-digit number, your iPhone has eSIM hardware. Dialling *#06# shows it too.
- Open Settings > Mobile Service (or Cellular) and look for Add eSIM.
- Look for a SIM tray on the side of the phone. If there’s one, you have a physical SIM and an eSIM. If not, you have an eSIM-only model.

How to activate eSIM on an iPhone in India
Apple lists several ways to set up an eSIM, and the one you get depends on your carrier:
- eSIM Carrier Activation: the carrier sends the eSIM to your iPhone digitally. Tap the ‘Network Provider Mobile Plan Ready to Be Installed’ notification, tap Continue, then make a test call.
- QR code: scan it with the Camera app and tap the ‘Mobile Plan Detected’ notification. On iOS 17.4 or later you can also touch and hold a QR code in your email or browser and tap Add eSIM.
- Carrier app or link: download the carrier’s app, or tap the activation link on iOS 17.4 or later.
- Manual entry: Settings > Mobile Service > Add Mobile Plan > Enter Details Manually.
If the new plan replaces the one on your physical SIM, Apple says to remove the physical SIM and restart the iPhone.
Indian carriers add their own quirks on top, and they differ more than you’d expect. Jio asks for a registered email, and iPhone users who haven’t registered one can see Error Code 999. Airtel gives you 4 hours to download the profile after your request and blocks SMS for 24 hours afterwards. Vi wants an ‘eSIMY’ reply to 199 within 15 minutes and also blocks iMessage and FaceTime on iPhones for 24 hours. The full steps for each carrier are in our guide on how to get an eSIM in India.
One practical tip: don’t start the request five minutes before you leave the house. Jio applies a 2-hour cooling period and Airtel gives you a 4-hour window to finish, so pick a time when you’ve got solid Wi-Fi and atleast an hour to spare. And keep your old SIM in until the new eSIM is properly working.
How to move your eSIM to a new iPhone
If your carrier supports eSIM Quick Transfer, the number can be moved without contacting the operator. Both iPhones need iOS 18.4 or later, the same Apple Account, Bluetooth switched on, and they should be close to each other.
- On the new iPhone, open Settings > Mobile Service > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Pick the plan to transfer, or tap Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
- Confirm on the old iPhone, or enter the code the new one shows.
- Wait for the plan to activate. It deactivates the SIM on your old iPhone.
With iOS 26 or later, more than one number can be transferred, and some carriers and phone makers also support moving an eSIM between Android and iPhone. Otherwise your carrier has to reissue the eSIM, and you’ll recieve a fresh QR code or an activation link.
Buying an iPhone abroad or second-hand
Check the regional model first, because this is where people get caught out. A US iPhone from the 14 onward has no SIM tray at all, so it only works here if if your carrier can issue you an eSIM for it. Apple also says that in mainland China only the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, 17e and Air support eSIM, and that certain models sold in Hong Kong and Macao have two nano-SIM slots instead. So that cheap China mainland iPhone from a grey-market seller? It might not do eSIM at all.
Before you hand over any money, ask to see Settings > General > About on the phone and check the model. If a seller won’t let you, walk away. That two-minute look is definately worth more than any listing photo.
Travelling abroad with your iPhone? Add a travel eSIM
An eSIM isn’t only for your everyday number. Since an iPhone can store several eSIM profiles, many travellers keep their Indian line active for calls and OTPs and add a data-only travel eSIM for the trip. The phone should be carrier-unlocked, and only two lines can be active at a time.
Two providers we cover on the site are Maya Mobile and 7G eSIM. Compare plans and coverage for your destination before buying, and check whether a plan includes calls and SMS or is data-only. Our Maya Mobile page and 7G eSIM page have more details.
