eSIM is a digital SIM card embedded within a device, such as a smartphone or smartwatch. Unlike a physical SIM card, there is no need to remove or insert an eSIM into the device. Instead, the eSIM is programmed to connect to network service providers. eSIMs use a technology called Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) to download SIM card data to the device. This technology allows users to switch network providers without the need to physically change the SIM card. With eSIM, users can add multiple numbers to their device, switch between them as needed, and avoid the hassle of carrying and inserting physical SIM cards.
How to check if your phone supports eSIM
The fastest test takes under two minutes.
- Dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone has eSIM hardware.
- Open Settings, then SIM or Mobile Service. If you see Add eSIM, you’re set.
- Make sure the phone is carrier-unlocked. A locked phone can have eSIM hardware and still refuse a new plan.
Support can depend on the region where a phone was sold, so a model on this list may still lack eSIM in some countries.
eSIM in India: what to know
Major Indian carriers Jio, Airtel and Vi offer eSIM on supported phones. If you’re buying a phone abroad or receiving one as a gift, check that it’s the variant sold in India, since some models ship without eSIM in certain regions.

Note: eSIM support is only available in certain regions. To check your OnePlus phone, go to Settings, then SIM card and mobile data. If the option ‘Manage eSIM card’ does not appear, your device does not support eSIM.

Which OnePlus phones support eSIM in India?
In India, eSIM works on the OnePlus 15, OnePlus 13 and OnePlus Open. Owners report it does not work on the OnePlus 13R, 12R, 12 or 11, or on Nord phones. How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
Follow the two-minute check above: dial *#06# and look for an EID, or look for ‘Add eSIM’ in your SIM settings.
Can a carrier-locked phone use eSIM?
Usually not until the carrier unlocks it.
Do the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17 have a physical SIM slot in India?
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max support eSIM in every market, and Apple lists only 12 markets where they are eSIM-only (the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE). India is not on that list, so phones sold here keep a nano-SIM tray alongside eSIM. The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. If you’re buying abroad, confirm the exact model with the seller.
Can I use a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time?
On most eSIM phones that also have a SIM tray, yes. You can keep your regular number on the physical SIM and add an eSIM for data or a second number. Some newer iPhones can even run two eSIMs at once.
Do I need an internet connection to activate an eSIM?
Yes. Your phone downloads the eSIM profile when you scan the QR code or use your carrier’s app, so connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data first.
What is an EID number?
The EID is a unique ID number for the eSIM hardware in your phone. You can see it by dialling *#06#, and some carriers ask for it when they set up your eSIM.
Can I move my eSIM to a new phone?
Often, but it depends on your phone and carrier. Some phones have a built-in transfer option, while others need your carrier to issue a new eSIM. Check with your carrier before you switch phones.
Is an eSIM safer than a physical SIM if my phone is lost or stolen?
An eSIM can’t be pulled out of the phone like a physical SIM card, which makes it harder for a thief to use your number in another device. You should still lock your phone and contact your carrier to block the line.
Can I use a travel eSIM in India with my own phone?
Yes, if your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. You can install a travel eSIM plan for mobile data while keeping your home number active. Many travel plans are data-only, so check whether calls and texts are included before you buy.
