In a significant step for India’s telecom sector, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched eSIM services nationwide, becoming the first public-sector telecom operator to do so.

Moreover, the rollout is powered by Tata Communications’ advanced MOVE platform, enabling millions of BSNL users to enjoy seamless, secure, and future-ready mobile connectivity without needing a physical SIM.

This development is a key milestone in strengthening India’s digital infrastructure. It also supports the government’s Digital India mission to make modern and secure digital services accessible to every citizen.

What the New eSIM Service Means for Users

Until now, only private telecom players like Jio and Airtel offered eSIM services in India.

Now, with BSNL entering the space, over 110 million (TRAI, August 2025) mobile customers can switch to eSIMs, enjoying easier activation, greater flexibility, and stronger security.

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a small digital chip built into your phone or smartwatch that can be activated online using a QR code. Thus, you do not need to insert or replace a physical SIM card.

This means:

  • No store visits to get a new SIM.
  • Easy switching between networks.
  • Dual-SIM phones can use one physical SIM and one eSIM.
  • Travelers can add international plans without changing SIM cards.

Beyond convenience, eSIMs also help the environment. They reduce the production and packaging of plastic SIM cards, which aligns well with India’s growing sustainability focus.

Tata Communications’ Role in the Project

BSNL’s eSIM technology runs on Tata Communications MOVE, developed by Tata Communications Collaboration Services Pvt. Ltd. (TCCSPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Communications.

The GSMA-certified MOVE meets global standards of security and connectivity. It also enables BSNL to remotely activate connections across 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.

Users simply scan a secure QR code on their devices to connect instantly, bypassing the need for a physical SIM card.

“We are proud to partner with BSNL to bring secure, scalable, and future-ready eSIM services to millions of people in India,” said A.S. Lakshminarayanan, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Communications.

He added that this partnership supports the vision of a more connected and self-reliant India.

Tata Communications provides digital connectivity services in over 190 countries and works with over 300 Fortune 500 companies. Consequently, its deep experience managing digital infrastructure has made it a trusted partner for BSNL’s modernization drive.

BSNL’s Step Towards Modernization

Once a leader in India’s telecom market, BSNL has been actively upgrading its network to compete with private operators. The launch of eSIM services, therefore, marks its push toward digital-first solutions and improved user experience.

“This Pan-India eSIM launch is a big step forward for us. With Tata Communications’ help, we bring more flexibility and security to mobile users across India,” said A. Robert Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL.

He emphasized that this supports our goal of building a strong and independent digital infrastructure for the future.

Experts say eSIM adoption will benefit both BSNL and customers. Specifically, it will simplify connectivity, lower manufacturing and logistics costs, and support India’s move toward digital efficiency.

According to GSMA Intelligence, the number of eSIM-enabled devices globally is expected to reach 6 billion by 2030, underlining the rapid growth of this technology.

What’s Next: eSIMs and India’s Digital Future

BSNL’s eSIM service currently focuses on mobile users, while the Tata Communications MOVE platform supports enterprise and IoT applications.

In the future, BSNL could extend eSIM technology to connected vehicles, smart meters, logistics networks, and smart city projects, thereby accelerating India’s digital transformation.

India’s IoT market is projected to reach $15 billion by 2026, and this collaboration positions BSNL and Tata Communications to play a central role in that growth.

Furthermore, the partnership aligns with Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiatives. It emphasizes data security, local innovation, and using Indian technology for Indian needs.

A Step Towards a More Connected India

Overall, the BSNL–Tata Communications partnership showcases how India’s public and private sectors can collaborate to bring advanced connectivity to millions.

For BSNL customers, it means faster connections, easier access, and fewer hassles with SIM cards.

As India prepares for 5G expansion and even 6G research, eSIM technology will be key to building a smarter, more connected nation. This move ensures that users from bustling cities to remote villages are ready for the next generation of digital communication.
